A good pub is one of the great pleasures of an English country stay. The area around Himley has more than its share — from canal-side inns to village locals with centuries of history behind them.
The Vine (Bull & Bladder), Brierley Hill
A short drive from the hotel, The Vine is home to Batham's Brewery — one of the last family-owned breweries in the Black Country. The mild and bitter are drawn straight from the barrel, and the filled rolls and bar snacks are legendary among locals. The pub has barely changed in decades, and that's exactly the point.
The Olde Swan (Ma Pardoe's), Netherton
Another classic Black Country pub with its own brewery. The Olde Swan has been brewing on site since at least the 1830s, and the interior retains many original features. Order a pint of Entire and a plate of ham, egg and chips — you won't be disappointed.
The Black Country pub scene is one of England's best-kept secrets — traditional breweries, proper beer and a welcome that hasn't changed in a hundred years.
The Plough, Swindon (near Wombourne)
A pretty canal-side pub on the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal, about a 25-minute walk along the towpath from Himley. It's a popular stop for walkers and boaters, with a garden overlooking the water and a menu of reliable pub classics.
The Whittington Inn, Kinver
Set in a striking half-timbered building, The Whittington claims to be one of the oldest inns in England. Whether or not the claim holds up historically, it's a handsome building with a good restaurant menu and a lovely garden. About fifteen minutes from the hotel by car.
What to Order
The Black Country has a proud brewing tradition. Look for local names: Batham's, Holden's, Enville, Salopian and Black Country Ales. If you prefer cider, several pubs stock local producers. And if you're eating, don't leave the area without trying a proper Black Country pork pie.
