Carved into a sandstone ridge on the Staffordshire–Worcestershire border, the Holy Austin Rock Houses at Kinver Edge are among the most unusual historic dwellings in England. People lived in these cave homes until the 1960s — and today, the National Trust has restored several of them so visitors can step inside and see what life was like.
The Rock Houses
The rock houses are cut directly into the soft red sandstone of Kinver Edge. From the outside they look like ordinary brick-fronted cottages, but walk around the back and you realise the rear rooms are hollowed out of solid rock. The Trust has furnished two sets of rooms to show different periods — one styled as an Edwardian home, the other as a 1930s dwelling.
Entry is free for National Trust members. Non-members pay a small fee, and the site is open from March through to October, typically Thursday to Sunday. It is worth checking the Trust website before you visit, as opening days can vary.
Walking Kinver Edge
Beyond the rock houses, Kinver Edge itself is a superb walking spot. The heathland ridge offers wide views across Worcestershire and Shropshire, and the paths through the mixed woodland below are sheltered and peaceful. A circular route taking in the rock houses, the hilltop viewpoint and the woodland loop takes around ninety minutes at a comfortable pace.
The terrain is mostly well-maintained paths with some moderate inclines. Sturdy footwear is recommended, especially after rain when the sandy paths can be slippery.
Kinver Edge is one of those places that makes you wonder why it took so long to visit. It deserves to be far better known.
The Village
Kinver village sits at the foot of the Edge and makes a natural stop before or after a walk. The High Street has a handful of independent shops, a well-regarded fish and chip shop, and two traditional pubs — The Vine and The Cross — both serving real ales and hearty pub food.
