The Black Country has a reputation shaped by its industrial past — ironworks, canals and coal mines. But spend a day exploring on foot and you'll discover a landscape of surprising green beauty: ancient woodlands, landscaped parks, nature reserves and quiet canal towpaths.
Himley Park
The obvious starting point. 180 acres of mature parkland with ornamental lakes, a woodland belt and views across open countryside. Free entry, year-round access, and less than a mile from the hotel.
Baggeridge Country Park
A former colliery site transformed into a beautiful country park with waymarked trails through meadows and mixed woodland. The park includes a visitor centre, play areas and picnic spots — it's excellent for families. A twenty-minute walk or five-minute drive from Himley.
The Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal
The canal towpath is one of the best walking routes in the area: flat, scenic, and accessible in all weathers. From Himley you can walk south towards Kinver (about 4 miles each way) or north towards Wombourne (about 2 miles). Both directions pass through peaceful countryside and end at welcoming pubs.
Canal walks have a rhythm of their own. The water is still, the path is flat, and the pace drops to exactly the speed you need it to be.
Kinver Edge & the Rock Houses
A little further afield (about 20 minutes by car), Kinver Edge is a dramatic sandstone ridge managed by the National Trust. The rock houses — homes carved into the cliff face and inhabited until the 1960s — are genuinely fascinating. The views from the ridge extend across three counties on a clear day.
Walking from the Hotel
Several of these green spaces are reachable on foot from Himley Country Hotel. Ask at reception for our printed walking routes, or simply head towards Himley Hall and follow the paths.
There is a deep satisfaction in discovering beauty where you didn't expect it. The green spaces around Himley reward curiosity — and they're waiting just outside the hotel door.
