Dudley Zoo is not your typical zoo. For a start, it's built inside the ruins of an 11th-century castle. Then there's the architecture — twelve Grade II listed buildings designed by Berthold Lubetkin, the pioneer of British modernism. And then, of course, there are the animals.

The Animals

The zoo is home to over 1,300 animals across more than 100 species. Highlights include Sumatran tigers, snow leopards, meerkats, Humboldt penguins and a walk-through lemur enclosure that delights visitors of all ages. The zoo participates in international breeding programmes for several endangered species.

The Castle

Dudley Castle dates from 1070 and its ruins crown the hill at the centre of the zoo. The views from the keep extend across the entire Black Country and, on clear days, towards the Shropshire Hills. The castle grounds host seasonal events including medieval fairs and outdoor theatre.

The Tecton Buildings

Architecture enthusiasts will appreciate the twelve concrete structures designed by Berthold Lubetkin and the Tecton group in the 1930s. These distinctive, swooping forms were revolutionary at the time and remain some of the finest examples of modernist zoo architecture in the world.

Where else can you see Sumatran tigers from the battlements of a Norman castle, surrounded by Grade II listed modernist architecture?
